As Long as He’s Winning, Martin’s Ok with Points Standing November 6, 2009

A somewhat emotional Mark Martin reflected on his NASCAR career during a press conference at Texas Motor Speedway.

Martin’s finished second in the points four times in his career, and currently sits second behind teammate Jimmie Johnson. All season long, Martin’s said he’s content not winning a championship, and took the ride in the Hendrick Motorsports No. 5 car to win races, which he’s done five times in 2009.

“I have learned a lot and I have seen a lot and I have come to realize that I’m no Dale Earnhardt. My record don’t stand up to his…just doesn’t. And when you stand me up against Jeff Gordon…it just don’t stand up to it man. I understand that,” Martin said.“I don’t think I am better than all those guys, I am just glad I can get out there and beat them once in a while. If I couldn’t, it might not be as appealing to me.”

TMS has been good to Mark Martin. He’s got one Cup Series win at the track and three career wins in the Nationwide Series. After flipping on the final lap of last week’s race at Talladega, it’s a great track for Martin to dust himself off and potentially capture another win.

But that’s not to say it’ll be a cake walk.

The track “poses the same kind of problem than any other one because if you want to win you have to go through the corners faster than anyone else and that is a challenge because these corners are a little bit flat on the exit, a little flat on the entry and good banking in the center and you have to figure out a way to make your car roll through there faster than everybody else,” Martin said.
